From 27 to 29 May 2026, Turin hosted the 5th edition of the #CitiesMissionConference2026, organised by the European Commission, NetZeroCities and the CittĂ di Torino. The event brought together over 100 European cities, climate experts, policymakers and business representatives to advance Europe's urban climate transition focusing on mobilising finance, strengthening multi-level partnerships, and accelerating implementation towards 2030.
#ClimaGen was part of the conversation. Our city partner Torino hosted the conference and organised deep dives into its different activities and areas, and the project coordinator NTNU engaged with our sister projects and the conference topics.
Laura Ribotta of Torino presented in the session "Torino's experience from NBS neighbourhood pilot to climate strategy & role of EU projects", organised by the Urban Greening Cluster of our sister projects. She was tracing the path that the City of Turin has taken through successive EU-funded projects on nature-based solutions (NBS).
🔹 The journey began with ProGIreg, a Horizon 2020 project that piloted nature-based solutions at neighbourhood scale in Turin's Mirafiori district. ClimaGen is now building on this foundation, helping the city scale up NBS approaches into a broader climate strategy and integrate them into mainstream urban planning and design.
🔹 Laura's core message was clear: technical solutions are not enough. The real transformation requires a cultural shift among designers, architects and urban planners, a shift in how they think about green infrastructure, biodiversity, and climate resilience as integral parts of their professional practice, not add-ons.
🚀 Turin has made genuine progress along this path. EU projects have created space for experimentation, cross-sector collaboration and knowledge exchange, but there is still work to do. Embedding this new culture into everyday planning processes takes time, commitment, and continued institutional support.
The #CitiesMissionConference2026 was a reminder that cities across Europe are grappling with the same challenges and that shared learning, like the kind ClimaGen fosters, is one of the most powerful tools we have.
