Our Approach

ClimaGen’s approach is built around five interconnected concepts—ClimaLabs, ClimaGreens, ClimaImpact, ClimaValue and ClimaGames—that guide all activities across the nine participating cities. Together, these concepts support the implementation and planning of renaturing actions, strengthen local capacities, provide scientific frameworks, and enable inclusive participation.

Cities aim to increase public green space by at least 25%, with Demonstration Cities implementing measures and Replication Cities planning them.

ClimaLabs
ClimaLabs is a collaborative framework where cities and communities co-create climate-resilient solutions, including Living Lab approaches. They bring together stakeholders across arts, culture and youth, entrepreneurship and finance, and organisational resilience to support long-term planning strategies.
ClimaGreens
ClimaGreens focuses on urban greening and renaturing to enhance climate resilience and well-being. They promote nature-based solutions tailored to local contexts and vulnerable neighbourhoods. ClimaGreens demonstrates how green interventions can deliver environmental, climate, and social benefits.
ClimaImpact
ClimaImpact provides tools and frameworks to enhance, document and assess project impacts. It supports cities in capturing the multiple outcomes and impacts of ClimaGen activities and ensures evidence-based learning, comparison and replication.
ClimaValue
ClimaValue focuses on communication, dissemination and capacity building. It translates project results into guidance, policy insights and practical tools. ClimaValue supports uptake and long-term impact beyond the project duration.
ClimaGames
ClimaGames uses participatory cocreative and playful methods to engage partners and stakeholders, they support learning, dialogue and awareness around climate action. ClimaGames are the tools we use to make complex challenges accessible and inclusive.

ClimaLabs

By focusing on co-creation, ClimaLabs help public actors, businesses, researchers, and civil society take an active role in renaturing and regeneration processes. We work with four key groups:

01

Public sector

Municipalities, urban planners, local authorities and public agencies.

02

Private sector

Companies, start-ups, technology providers and investors.

03

Academia

Universities, research institutes, students and innovation hubs.

04

Civil society

Schools, youth organisations, NGOs, community groups and citizens.

ClimaGreens

ClimaGreens supports cities in using nature-based solutions to strengthen climate resilience and improve quality of life. It targets local needs and vulnerable areas, showing how green actions can create environmental, social, cultural, and health benefits. Examples include soil regeneration, circular food systems, heritage-based renewal, inclusive public spaces, arts and culture, entrepreneurship, and cooperative regional clusters.

Impact Pathways

To collectively fine-tune the scope of actions and enhance impacts. This is part of the monitoring, documentation and learning strategy.

Impact Model Definition

KPIs, monitoring procedures and assessment methods.

Monitoring & Evaluation Activities

City-level monitoring and assessment activities that generate evidence on environmental and social impacts, supporting continuous learning and improvement.

ClimaImpact

ClimaImpact supports decision-making thanks to a tailored  ClimaGen Impact Model (KPIs, monitoring and assessment methods) co-created with cities and partners. The ClimaGen Impact Model is built on the updated understanding of the goals and of the critical actions, steps and intermediate outcomes in the cities ClimaGen journeys (Impact Pathways). It also leads project-wide monitoring and evaluation and supports local assessments in the cities.

Translate complex project findings into easy-to-understand guidance, policy insights, and practical tools.

ClimaValue

ClimaValue leads the way in communication, dissemination, and capacity building for ClimaGen. This means we:

Support the adoption of these results by cities, policymakers, and other stakeholders.

Structure communication and dissemination activities across the project, including common frameworks and locally adapted approaches.

Ensure the project’s impact lasts beyond its official timeline.
