Gdańsk is the capital of the Pomeranian region with the area of app. 683 km² and population over 487,000 inhabitants. The city plays a role as a key economic and transport hub in the Baltic Sea region. In recent years Gdańsk has worked intensely to make climate adaptation and mitigation solutions integral to its urban policies through innovative approaches to water management, green infrastructure and resilient spatial planning.

GdańskTech is a leading Polish university, ranked second among Research Universities, with around 14,000 students from over 60 countries. In 2022 it joined the ENHANCE European consortium and holds the HR Excellence in Research award. It offers more than 50 study programmes, two doctoral schools, and a network of 300+ laboratories and research centres fostering innovation.

Inicjatywa Miasto

Inicjatywa Miasto Association works to improve the quality of public space through dialogue and action. We co-create place-based programmes that integrate different dimensions. We focus on practical, collaborative actions that often do not require construction work. These targeted interventions can significantly enhance how a place is perceived.

City Overview

Tartu is a Demonstration City, working on urban greening and regeneration to strengthen climate resilience and quality of life. By integrating co-creation, youth engagement and nature-based solutions, Tartu is developing inclusive approaches to transform public spaces and support sustainable urban development.

Local Focus & Challenges

Tartu faces climate challenges such as heat stress and changing precipitation patterns, with vulnerable neighbourhoods often lacking access to quality green spaces.

ClimaGen supports Tartu in integrating co-creation, innovation and youth engagement into local regeneration strategies.
