From asphalt to meadow: testing urban nature in Trondheim's Nyhavna
On Strandveikaia in Nyhavna, a former warehouse area once covered entirely in asphalt is now Trondheim's test field for urban nature. The site brings together Nyhavna Utvikling, Trondheim Port, and students from NTNU studying biology and architecture, each looking at the same patch of ground from a different angle.
The biology students are running a real-world experiment on which local meadow plants and wildflowers can establish themselves when grown in large planter boxes set directly into an urban, industrial environment. The old asphalt at Strandveien 102 has already been removed, and the boxes are now filled with seed mixes chosen to test what takes hold and what does not. Alongside them, architecture students are designing furniture and small installations to make the space usable and pleasant for the people who pass through it, with construction planned for autumn 2026. Improvements to the walking and cycling routes through Nyhavna are part of the same effort.
Financed jointly by 'Områdesatsingene i Trondheim' and by #ClimaGen. It shows how the project funding and the municipality's own programmes can work side by side to turn a former industrial site into shared green space.
