As a Demonstration City in the ClimaGen project, Trondheim is piloting climate-resilient urban re-greening in the districts of Lademoen and Nyhavna. This report details the progress made during the first 18 months of the project up to June 2026, focusing on the implementation of nature-based solutions and the establishment of local co-creation frameworks.
The project area represents an ongoing complex urban transition, connecting the historic residential neighborhood of Lademoen with the industrial harbor of Nyhavna. The primary objective is to overcome socio-economic vulnerabilities and poor physical connectivity through measures that at the same time improve the local biodiversity and public spaces, while addressing climate mitigation and adaptation.
During this reporting period, five strategic interventions have been prioritized:
Testing of temporary vegetation and plant species as urban nature restoration measures
Establishing stepping stones for both nature and people
Safer and more attractive pedestrian connections with vegetation
Strengthening green structures in the streets of Lademoen
Strengthening ecological functions in existing parks of Lademoen
The ClimaLab serves as the frame for Trondheim’s "Living Lab" activities:
Research and monitoring: Working with NTNU and SINTEF to define the socio-ecological baseline and the long-term impact model.
Cultural engagement: Partnering with the arts sector, including Rosendal Teater and Trondheim art biennale 2026, to use cultural innovation as a tool for community dialogue.
Intergenerational co-creation: Engaging students and schools, youth entrepreneurs, and local residents in the design and maintenance of their new green spaces.
A key lesson learned is the importance of integrating ClimaGen activities into overarching municipal strategies. The project is firmly anchored in Trondheim’s Climate City Contract (CCC) and the Area Investment Programme (AIP). This alignment ensures that the innovative methodologies developed for nature-based solutions and social inclusion can be scaled from a neighborhood pilot to a city-wide standard.
